Brian E. Schmidt is currently the energy chief engineer at Black & Veatch. In his role, he is accountable for energy engineering processes, engineering interfaces with other energy processes, incorporating continuous improvement and lessons learned for engineering processes, and resolution of project engineering issues. The chief engineer is also accountable for the engineering risk management for proposals and projects. The chief engineer’s roles and responsibilities are global. Prior to this role, Schmidt was the director of project controls within Black & Veatch’s energy business. In this role, Schmidt was responsible to ensure that planning, scheduling and cost control was implemented on all Energy Division projects. This included recruiting staff, professional development, training, mentoring, policy and procedure development and implementation, budgeting, and general management of the Project Controls Department. Prior to the project controls role, Schmidt was the chief civil / structural / architectural engineer of energy. Primary responsibilities included business process ownership of civil / structural / architectural processes, development of a technical training program, development, preparation and maintenance of engineering guides, standards, specifications, templates, standard details, information technology, and third party software, Six Sigma projects, quality control, supplier technical qualifications, and global office technical development. Schmidt is experienced in the development of project schedules, cost reporting, and cost forecasting. Schmidt is also experienced in the design of site work, foundations, reinforced concrete, and structural steel, and in the preparation and administration of material handling equipment, general construction, and superstructure contracts. Schmidt has been involved in structural steel and reinforced concrete design of various material handling structures, coal fueled power plant structures, combined cycle and combustion turbine structures, SCR structures and ductwork, and structural modifications for CEM systems.
