Stark has been selected as the 2022-2023 Cross-USA Lecturer by the Geo-Institute (G-I) of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Cross-USA Lecturers are selected based on a range of criteria, including prestige in the geoprofessional community, professional achievements, and lecture abilities. Stark will present lectures at all of the requesting G-I Chapters and Graduate Student Organizations (GSOs) across the United States. In addition, two nationwide virtual presentations are planned. Stark’s interdisciplinary research and teaching activities include the static and seismic stability of natural and manmade slopes such as dams, levees, floodwalls, embankments and waste containment facilities; geosynthetics and geomembranes; soil liquefied strength; and railroad geotechnics. He has been involved in a number of projects on these topics, which has facilitated the transfer of his research results to practice. His current research is focused on three-dimensional slope stability, soil shear strengths, heating events in waste containment facilities and drilled shaft integrity testing. Among Stark’s many research, teaching and service honors are the 2022 T.H. Wu Lecture at The Ohio State University; George H. Norman Medal, two Thomas A. Middlebrooks Awards, Associate Journal Editor Award, R.M. Quigley Award, Walter L. Huber Research Prize and Arthur Casagrande Professional Development Award.
