Speaker: Bill Nicks as Octave Chanute
Our guest speaker will be Civil Engineer Octave Chanute as performed by area historian and historic 1st person re-enactor Bill Nicks. Chanute was the civil engineer who built (1869) the Hannibal Bridge in Kansas City, the first Railroad Bridge over that ‘treacherous’ Missouri River. The bridge made KC the dominant city in the Missouri Valley. Learn about Chanute’s life, his involvement with Lenexa Ks, how Chanute Ks came to bear his name and how he mentored the Wright Brothers in their quest for controlled flight.
Bill Nicks, through his company www.HistoryKC.com conducts historic bus tours and has been speaking to historic-minded groups since 1996. Nicks also re-enacts three other great men; Dr. James Naismith, Dwight Eisenhower and Wilbur Wright. He is employed full time with The American Royal Association as Director of Events. His office is in the Historic West Bottoms near the old KC Stockyards. Yards designed by Octave Chanute. Come enjoy an ‘edu-taining’ lunch hour with Octave Chanute.
