President’s Message

Welcome to the ASCE Kansas City Section webpage. Whether you’re a very experienced Life Member of ASCE or just assessing what ASCE might offer you as a young engineer or interested student, there are numerous opportunities for you to benefit from the many services ASCE provides and the activities supported by the Kansas City Section.
One of the differences you have likely already noticed is that after many years of jointly hosting a website, the Kansas City Section of ASCE and the Western Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers are using separate and dedicated websites to allow both organizations to better serve their members. ASCE will continue to use this website (www.kcengineers.org) and will continue to provide a link to the Western Chapter website; however, the change will allow us to redesign the site for more useful purposes. Look for positive changes to come and please provide us with your constructive feedback.
As a premier professional engineering organization with over 150 years of history, ASCE is extremely well organized and operated to provide a wealth of technical training, personal and professional development, and public policy support. I am very pleased to confirm that the Kansas City Section is very vibrant and engaged, even in its 90th year. We are fortunate to have a very strong and sound organization that is extremely service-oriented toward its members, and focused on providing all sections with all the tools necessary to thrive.
As we prepare for the coming year, our Section has recently:
- Developed a full year of monthly programs with relevant and varied content, often holding joint meetings with other professional organizations such as CSI, MSPE, and KSPE, to broaden the network of the professional community
- Installed continuing and strong leadership in our very active Geotechnical Committee, local chapter of EWRI, and Younger Members Group,
- •Continued our work to recognize significant historical local engineering contributions such as the Armour-Swift Burlington (ASB) Bridge, and
- Provided direct support in the development and implementation of a live PE refresher course for Civil Engineering at UMKC.
In August, we plan to have another enjoyable KC Section Fall Kick-off at the Boulevard Brewery. I hope you will join us to enjoy a few hours together over appetizers and drinks in an unmistakeable Kansas City venue, while we share our plans for the upcoming year and ways you can be involved.
Our Younger Members Group is comprised of awesome young professionals who do an outstanding job creating a great environment to foster professional growth, engage new professionals and students, perform meaningful community service, and have a lot of fun! Click on their link at the top of the page to browse their web pages and see all the great things they are doing, and ways you can plug in if interested.
Interested in getting involved but not ready to lead the whole parade? Not sure how our needs and your skills and interests align? Contact me or any of the other KC Section Board of Directors and we’ll be glad to provide you information on ways that you can get to know others and help out while making a positive contribution.
Kensey W. Russell, P.E., M. ASCE
President
