Elevation Certificate Workshop
The Elevation Certificate Workshop is designed for local floodplain administrators, surveyors, engineers, and others who deal with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The course will provide an understanding of the information needed to properly complete an Elevation Certificate.

Registration fee: $25
The following hours have been approved for attendees: 
4 Continuing Education Credits for Certified Floodplain Managers
4 Professional Development Hours

Quick 2/BFE Determination Workshop
The Quick 2/BFE Determination Workshop is designed for floodplain administrators, surveyors, and engineers. Quick 2 is a simple computer program designed by FEMA to calculate BFEs for un-numbered A Zones.

4 Continuing Education Credits for Certified Floodplain Managers
4 Professional Development Hours

 A LAPTOP IS REQUIRED FOR THIS WORKSHOP!!

54th Annual Missouri S&T Asphalt Conference

The 54th Annual Missouri S&T Asphalt Conference will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 6-7, 2011 at the Missouri University of Science & Technology.

Presentations at the conference include: warm mix for streets and parking lots, porous asphalt in Missouri, liquid asphalt supply and pricing, surface leveling mixes, high float emulsions, shingle mix problems, new paving equipment controls, full depth reclamation, proper rolling, polyurethane deep injection, safety edge paving, high RAP content plants, MAPA update, new binder grade specifications, reflective cracking prevention, ride roughness measurement, and MoDOT specification and research updates.

Design and Construction of Steel Sheet Piling Structures Seminar

Presented by: Richard Hartman, Ph.D., P.E. (Hartman Engineering)

The Design and Construction of Steel Sheet Piling Structures Seminar is a one day class covering topics ranging from design concepts, to practical field problems, through recent product advancements in the design and manufacturing of steel sheet piling.

The seminar will be presented by Richard Hartman, Ph.D., P.E., a leading international expert in the design and construction of steel sheet pile structures.  Dr. Hartman is licensed as a professional engineer in 38 states and has over 40 years of experience in the subject.  For the past 15 years he has been involved in the research and design of new sheet pile sections and, based on that research, holds four patents for sheet piling sections.

Seminar Content

  • Design parameters, layout, and construction considerations for cellular cofferdams
  • Design and construction considerations for bulkheads, open cell designs and combination walls
  • Design and construction considerations for cofferdams and trenches.
  • Properties of steel sheet piling, changes in steel pile manufacturing, concerns regarding performance, tranverse loads, stresses in sheet piling, and redesign of sheet piling sections 
  • Review of instability of the soil/rock in the bottom of an excavation for steel sheet piling structures

Practical Mine Ventilation Design & Control Short Course

Presented by the Western Mining Safety and Health and Translation Center in conjunction with Missouri University of Science and Technology
May 4-6, 2011

Missouri S&T announces Practical Mine Ventilation Design and Control Short course to be held on campus May 4-6, 2011. This three-day course will provide participants with a sufficient background to design and maintain an underground ventilation system. The materials taught apply to most underground situations, including coal, metal, and nonmetal mines, with the emphasis on practical applications.

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for ventilation and planning engineers, safety engineers, production; technical and supervisory personnel who need to become proficient or need a refresher course in mine ventilation. For the computer simulation section, experience on the use of computers is helpful but not necessary.

Course Director
Dr. Jerry C. Tien, P.E., Associate Professor in Mining Engineering, Missouri S&T
Dr. Jerry Tien is a Registered Professional Engineer in Kentucky and has over 36 years of ventilation related work, research, and teaching experience. Before coming to Missouri S&T, Dr. Tien worked for the White Pine Copper Company for two years, Peabody Coal Company as a Ventilation Specialist for 10 years, and for Asian American Coal, Inc., Taiyuan, Shanxi, China, as V.P., Technical Service for 1.5 years. He has accumulated extensive practical experience in ventilation system design, pressure surveys and cost evaluation, for both metal, non-metal and coal mines.

Fee and Registration
The fee of $995 covers program materials, three luncheons, coffee breaks, and all instructional costs and materials. Advance registration is encouraged. Missouri S&T reserves the right to cancel the course and return all registration fees if the minimum registration is not received. No course refund is payable for cancellation after April 27, 2011.

Attendees completing this three-day course will be awarded 24 PDHs.

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri University of Science & Technology will host the 2011 GeoMO Conference May 6, 2011.

Join us May 6, 2011, for GeoMO 2011, as we discuss Practical Applications of Waves to Measure Soil Properties; and professional issues associated with engineering licensure with guest lecturer, Dr. Vince Drnevich.

This year’s focus is stress and electromagnetic waves with some sessions on ethics. The speaker will be Prof. Vincent Drnevich, Ph.D., P.E. of the faculty of Purdue University. Dr. Drnevich is recognized internationally for his research on the engineering properties of soils and concrete, especially as measured by stress wave propagation and electromagnetic wave propagation. He is the recipient of many awards including the ASCE Huber Award and Norman Medal, the ASTM Hogentogler Award and Woodland G. Shockley Award, the ASEE George Wadlin Award, and Chi Epsilon Harold T.
