Women in ASCE Cover includes several Kansas City Section Civil Engineers

How many members of the Kansas City Section can you spot in the latest ASCE News insert? If you get Civil Engineering Magazine, you received the insert this month to coincide with Women’s History Month. There are a lot of good conversation starters in there. While we have come a long way as a profession, we still have work to do.

Congratulations and thank you to the women representing ASCE and Kansas City! Jennifer Jacka-Taylor, P.E, ENV SP Nicole Tauheed Kim Pemberton, PE Sheryl Gallagher Sam Kevern  Please tag anyone I missed!

KC ASCE and SWE Team up for 3rd Straight Year giving back with Harvesters

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the KC Section teamed up with the Society of Women Engineers in Kansas City to give back on Saturday November 4th at Harvesters. This is the third year the groups combine to support our local Kansas City community and this year, once again the groups had 20 volunteers.

The group sorted through frozen foods and divided them into meat, non-meat, bulk, bread/desserts, frozen meals, among others.

After almost 2 hours of volunteering, the groups gathered at Waldo Pizza to share lunch together and continue networking. During lunch, Becca Brader (SWE KC President) and Mike Winckler (KC ASCE President) spoke about upcoming events for both organizations.

We are already looking forward to the 4th Annual Harvesters Volunteering Event!

Thank you to our ASCE members supporting this exciting project in Olathe in support of Friends of Johnson County Developmental Supports. Very similar to a project the KC ASCE YMG completed two years ago in Shawnee Mission Park Shelter No. 6 – this time around ASCE helped build a wooden – ADA ramp for 4 young men with disabilities so they could enjoy their backyard in Olathe, KS.

This is the second project ASCE Kansas City Section has completed with Friends of JCDS this year. Earlier this year, we supported them with painting inside this home so it could be ready for move-in for the 4 residents.

More information on Friends of JCDS can be found here: http://friendsofjcds.com/about-us/

This morning (5/3/17), despite the rainy weather, the Missouri and Kansas ASFPM (Association of State Floodplain Managers) hosted our 5k run on the Riverfront Heritage Trail. This run was the first year of the ASCE Kansas City Section – Annual Kiosk Run, to celebrate engineering in Kansas City and the landmark ASB Bridge. The participants ran from Berkley Park to the Kit Bond Bridge, then back under the ASB Bridge, by the ASCE Kiosk, to Broadway Bridge, and back. The winner was Glenn Heistand with the Illinois State Water Survey, with a time of 20 minutes ~21 seconds. Congratulations Glenn and thank you ASFPM, Raceday Timing Solutions, Cody Porter, Jason Schneider, Tom Jacobs, and the other volunteers. We look forward to piggy-backing onto some other engineering conference next year, to perpetuate this annual event!

Thanks, ASCE KC Section President – John Blancett
