On Wednesday March 29th, over 12 ASCE Volunteers from the Diversity and Inclusion Committee in Kansas City arrived at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. There, they provided mentoring to at least one hundred college students attending the 43rd Annual National Society of Black Engineers Convention in Bartle Hall.
The event titled “Conversations with Civil Engineers” has become an Annual event during this convention and is led by Lisa Black (ASCE Society level) and Bob Evans, P.E., F.ASCE. Thank you to Nicole Tauheed from DuBois Consultants for providing KC ASCE with the local leadership during the event.
The disciplines represented and discussed with the students included:
- WATER RESOURCES
- CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
- COASTAL/OFF SHORE
The employers represented included: DuBois Consultants, HNTB, CTI & Associates, Inc., Black & Veatch, Burns and McDonnell, CFS Engineers, Terracon, George Butler and Associates, KCK Public Board of Utilities, Turner Construction, City of Independence, and VSM Engineering.
On Saturday January 21st, 18 volunteers from ASCE, APWA, Friends of Johnson County Developmental Services and the ASCE/APWA student chapter of UMKC spent most of their Saturday painting inside a home in E 1201 Loula Street in Olathe, KS. During this event, the volunteers placed some sheetrock, and painted the home which was about to house 4 individuals with developmental disabilities. The organization Friends of JCDS provides support to these individuals by providing low rent housing and job opportunities for them to lead a regular lifestyle. In addition to painting, the volunteers were tasked with clearing some areas inside the home and assembling some furniture. We thank Friends of JCDS for allowing us to support their cause and to ASCE and APWA in Kansas City for providing lunch!

By the end of 2016, KC Section President John Blancett attended the Section and Governor Leaders Workshop at Society in Reston, VA. The KC Section co-hosted two very successful meetings with UMKC in October and with SAME Greater KC Post in November. Both events were highly attended! The KC Section Younger Members held engaging monthly meetings, their President Stephen Stinger was recognized by the KC Ingram’s magazine and they hosted their Annual KC Sporting Tailgate Event.
The KC Section provided once again four scholarships to their members as preparation for their Professional Engineering Exam, this course is held at UMKC, lasts 8 weeks and provides excellent preparation. Look out for next year’s Scholarship Application.

The KC Section held their first post summer meeting on September 12th at Burns and McDonnell in a Joint Meeting with APWA KC Metro Chapter. The KC Section Younger Members wrapped up another success fundraising year by hosting the 11th Annual Charity Golf Tournament benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation and during the summer attended the Treehouse Unveil partially funded by KC ASCE’s donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri for Tyler a boy living with CHARGE Syndrome in Kingsville, MO.

ASCE on the front page of the Kansas City Star!
Last Fall, the KC Section was recognized by the KU School of Engineering as one of their Engineering Industry Partners. During this event, the School of Engineering highlighted the Innovations and Research ongoing in their Lawrence campus. The KC Section is proud to support the University of Missouri – Kansas City and the University of Kansas in Lawrence through the annual fundraising efforts of Geotechnical Committee within the Kansas City Section.
On Tuesday, December 7th, ASCE along with AWPA will co-host a roundtable discussion with elected officials on Financing Public Works Projects.
