Envision is a sustainability rating system that has been adopted by many cities, including Kansas City, Missouri, as an evaluation process to plan, design, and construct more sustainable public infrastructure projects. Envision is a rating tool, similar to LEED that can be applied to infrastructure projects for the purpose of comparing improvement alternatives beyond just costs. Envision can also provide an overall process for evaluating infrastructure programs or for the development of capital improvement plans. This presentation will provide an overview of the Envision rating system, the project verification process, and an example of applying Envision at a program level.

On Saturday January 21st, 18 volunteers from ASCE, APWA, Friends of Johnson County Developmental Services and the ASCE/APWA student chapter of UMKC spent most of their Saturday painting inside a home in E 1201 Loula Street in Olathe, KS. During this event, the volunteers placed some sheetrock, and painted the home which was about to house 4 individuals with developmental disabilities. The organization Friends of JCDS provides support to these individuals by providing low rent housing and job opportunities for them to lead a regular lifestyle. In addition to painting, the volunteers were tasked with clearing some areas inside the home and assembling some furniture. We thank Friends of JCDS for allowing us to support their cause and to ASCE and APWA in Kansas City for providing lunch!

The local news channel visited the home during our volunteering and ASCE was featured in the news (follow link for the video) :
